The music industry will attempt to rehabilitate its rocky relationship with the Internet by bypassing troublesome middlemen, such as Napster and YouTube, and communicating directly with its legion of music and music-video fans.

  

Universal Music U.K. said Thursday it will test a set of branded Internet broadcast channels through which the company and its artists will deliver music, video, concert footage, and behind-the-scenes chats directly to PCs, PDAs, cell phones, and other digital media devices.

In a bid to block renegade Web sites from giving away its songs and videos, Universal Music Group is set to launch an Internet service to make sure it can cash in on its own material.

The new service, which launches in the U.K.today, will become available to U.S. consumers in December and will eventually give users legal access to the thousands of artists under Universal's umbrella.

Universal Music is launching a broadband channel to showcase and sell its artists' repertoires direct to users.

Universal's Musividz could be a precursor to the company rolling out its own digital TV channel. It will feature the company's entire music and video catalogue, consisting of over 462 acts, making content available over the web and on mobile devices.

Individual Universal labels such as Island and Polydor currently have download stores, but not Universal Music Group as a whole.

The company's "Musicvidz" will debut with streaming videos; in December, utilizing New York-based WWEBNET's operating system, it will allow delivery of audio and up to DVD-quality video to consumers' desktops, without visits to the Web site.
